Can’t Install IE8 - Microsoft Security Essentials can't do a full scan - Quick Launch Toolbar icons have disappeared
I have 3 problems, so I have captured them in 3 separate discussions (one per issue).
I think the 3 problems are somewhat linked because they occurred after I got hit with a virus.
I think I was hit with the Pavelo virus based on what I found on the net. I received a yahoo IM from a friend that had a link to “foto” at a facebook url. I inadvertently went to the link. Stupid me!
Initially the laptop constantly shut down. Eventually the laptop started working … this may be an unrelated problem as I’ve read about problems with HP nx9420 on the web as well now.
Back to the virus. (I think) I cleared the virus by:
1. Running Microsoft Security Essentials – didn’t find anything
2. Running Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware – found a few things
3. Running SuperAntiSpyware – found a few things
4. Running CCleaner – remove a few things, including registry keys.
My laptop is a HP nx9420 running Vista Business (32 bit).
Anyway my issues are:
Issue 1 – Can’t Load IE8
My IE8 was very slow. I was getting a “not responding” message. So I would “end task” via the Task Manager. Eventually I downgraded to IE7, cleared the infections (per above), but now IE8 won’t load on my laptop. I’ve tried 2 approaches.
1. Automatic software downloads via Windows Updates. It can’t download any of the software – whether the package has IE8 or not. I have not been able to keep my laptop updated since the virus
2. Manual software downloads from the Microsoft website. I can successfully save it on to my desktop but, after accepting the licence conditions; it goes to the “Installing Windows IE8” screen and stays there
(until I give up).
Issue 2–MSE can’t do a full scan
I have not been able to do a full scan. (Please note that I never tried a full scan before the virus.)
I can successfully run a quick scan in normal mode and safe mode.
I can not successfully run a full scan in either mode. It scan’s for a while and after a few hours the laptop automatically shuts down. I have to restart it manually. I have no error messages. And due to the random nature of the problem, I don’t
know at what point it shuts down. I’ve tried it a few times.
Issue 3 – Quick Launch Toolbar icons have disappeared
The icons in my quick launch have disappeared. They are in:
C:\Users\Default\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick LaunchC:\Users\NA\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch
Based on my understanding, if it is in the 2nd folder then they should appear in the Quick Launch toolbar.

The McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool need NOT be used if McAfee Corporate was installed.
If you did not uninstall the Norton free-trial AND THEN download/run the Norton Removal Tool before installing NOD32, there's a very good chance that neither NOD32 nor the McAfee application installed & was working properly.
But all that's beside the point now.
You cannot install MSE or any other anti-virus/anti-spyware application if the computer's already infected.
Cleaning a Compromised System
Back-up any personal data (none of which should be considered 100% trustworthy at this point) then format the HDD & do a clean install of Windows. Please note that a Repair Install (AKA in-place upgrade) will NOT fix this!

After the clean install, you will have the equivalent of a "new computer" so take care of everything on the following page before otherwise connecting the machine to the internet or a local network (i.e., other computers) and before using a flash drive or
SDCard that isn't brand-new or hasn't been freshly formatted:

Tip: After getting the computer fully-patched, download/install KB971029 manually before connect a flash drive or other external drive to the computer: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971029
NB: The Norton free-trial be reinstalled (but invalid) when Windows is reinstalled.
You MUST uninstall the free-trial AND download/run the Norton
Removal Tool BEFORE installing any updates, Windows Service Packs or IE upgrades AND BEFORE installing your new anti-virus application.

- Open Internet Explorer.
- Go to "Tools > Internet Options > Advanced Tab".
- Uncheck "Enable third-party browser extensions".
- Click "Apply".
- Reboot your computer.
