Hi,

My laptop running Win7 has recently become unstable, crashing daily when using Firefox or Chrome and sometimes Excel.

The message box on the last occasion had the caption above. It also said:
"The instruction at 0x72C9D1CF referenced memory at 0x72C9D1CF.
The required data was not placed into memory because of an I/O error status of 0xc0000056. Click OK to terminate the program"

I have run diagnostics checks, scanned disk, defragmented etc.

The computer doesn't have Bluetooth so I wasn't using it. I wasn't using Internet Explorer or Windows Explorer so am mystified at the message.

Using Windows troubleshooter:

Click on Search on Charm bar and type Troubleshooting. Click on the very first option.
A new window will open. Click View all from the left pane.
Scroll down to the bottom and click on Windows update.
Troubleshooter window for Windows update will pop up. Click on NEXT. It may ask you for administrative permission.
The troubleshooter will automatically detect problems and fix it.
Now, close this window and try download/install the app which was previously showing error.

need some suggestions for restoring an xp (sp3) Acer netbook. It's stuck in a boot loop. It will not recognize an external CD or an external thumb drive.
Can I use dos at all anymore? It seems to be looking for a network cable. Can I use a network cable to restore this? and how?

I've signed on to AOL 9.5 and I opened a top story 2x (had 9.0 when it first happened and upgraded and still have the same issue) and the browsers opened up like crazy.
The first time it opened up about 35 pages and today it reached 40.
I don't use their
browser, but if a story catches my interest, I'd like to read it.

I recently had a problem with my pc and had it in the shop, but this happened once it returned.
I was told I had an infection and I had to get a new hard-drive cause some of my registry files got deleted by a program a friend suggested I install for my initial
problem which led me to bring it into the shop in the first place.

Any suggestions?

Broken clipboard, cut, copy, paste functions in Windows 7.

My clipboard functions just stopped working suddenly in Windows 7 Home edition.
Ctrl+X still deletes the selected text, but it does not add it to the clipboard.
All the functions are grayed out, regardless of whether anything has been selected or not.

I already tried using the right click, drop-down menu, and cut/copy/paste icon buttons, as well as the Ctrl+C, Ctrl+X and Ctrl+V shortcuts -- no dice.
Apparently it's the clipboard function itself that is broken here.

I also tried going through the "Start" menu search bar to access "clipbrd" and it says "no files found."

Is there some way of accessing a setting or something to get this working again? It's driving me nuts.
I am praying I don't have to use a rescue disc to handle this, as it always seems to trash my files.

I finally got it fixed! Turns out it was a setting in my Iobit Advanced Care software.
The memory management and "junk files cleanup" was messing with the clipboard.
All I had to do was open Iobit Advanced Care, go to "settings" and uncheck the "clipboard"
boxes in the "Quick Care" and "Deep Care" settings, and presto! All fixed.

There is a basic bug in the windows 7 calculator (only in standard view)

The equation 1 + 2 * 3 give the answer 9.
In fact the answer should be 7.

If one plays about a bit one discovers that it is simply performing operations on from left to right and failing to perform the multiplication and division before addition and subtraction.

If I try the same equation in either Scientific or Programmer view one gets the correct answer (i.e.
7)

I have a sheet for cost calculation in complex projects.
There are ten - fifteen columns, starting with item description, and initial cost, followed by different additions for freights, banking fees, contingency etc in percentages, then summing the costs
before having next column state margin followed by columns for end price.
To make it easier for controllers, I added one row per item, where I put the calculated the actual value of the percentages and margins, and also distribute accurate allocation for cost centres.
A few columns are merged for readibility; the item description
and a couple of sum-summaries and also the end price.
To facilitate handling during calculation, the rows are grouped two by two, both for readibility and eliminate unintentional changes to the formulas (I can't protect the sheet as adding/removing rows are done frequently),

The thing is, when having the groups contracted, that when moving about the sheet with the arrow keys, Excel skips one row when going up, bot not down through the sheet.
For instance, I change the base cost at G46 and going for G44 (merged and grouped so
they are adjacent to each other) to change the cost for the previous item, but after one press of the up arrow, I land at G42 - it skips one visible row.
This problem is only for the merged cells, and when having them expanded it works as expected - and also moving down works fine, it is only when moving upwards.

Note that I have "Summary rows below detail" under Outline unchecked, as the grouping is related to headers and not to summarys.

I have put a lot of work in this sheet, automaticly calculating currencies by exchange rates and summing per product lines, and the grouping is imperative to getting a good overview since our projects gladely needs a few hundred entries.

The problem is recreated and can be experienced in this excel file:

Try moving from C4 to C11, no problem, but move back up and you see how it jumps two rows at a time.

Please advise if this is a bug that can be fixed by a hotfix, or if there is any reasonable way to get around this.
I'd hate to be forced to un-merge the cells as it would affect a few formulas that collects the values per row.
I'm also not totally against
the idea that I might be doing something wrong,

OK, I see what you mean now.
The answer is to not use merged cells. They are a well known cause of issues for many things in Excel.
Alternatives are:
a) putting the values ABCD in the first row only (so in your file, cells C5, C7, C9 and C11 would contain A, B, C & D, but cells C6, C8, C10 and C12 would be blank),
or
b) putting the values ABCD in every row
If you do (a) above, you can use cell borders to make the cells appear
merged. You can do that automatically with Conditional Formatting:
Select cells C5:C12. Unmerge them, then do Home tab > Conditional Formatting > New Rule > Format only cells that contain > Format only cells with: Blanks > Format > Borders tab...
then apply only Left and Right borders using the buttons at the bottom of
the large white box. OK, OK.
Repeat the CF: Home tab > Conditional Formatting > New Rule > Format only cells that contain > Format only cells with:
No Blanks > Format > Borders tab...
then apply only Left and Right
AND TOP borders. OK, OK.
Apply borders to all sides of the other cells using All Borders in the Home tab > Font group > Borders.
Now do View tab > Show/Hide group > Gridlines (uncheck).
