Fast Solution to Problem: Backup error 0x80070002 'The System can not find the file specified' when using USB external hard drive as NAS

Backup error 0x80070002 'The System can not find the file specified' when using USB external hard drive as NAS

Hello,

I am unable to use windows backup on Windows 7 when backing up over a home network.
I have a custom made desktop with an asrock 890gx pro3 motherboard running windows 7 professional edition.
I am attempting to backup to a 500GB Western Digital MyPassport
(with Smartware disabled) portable external HD.
The external hard drive is attached to a USB port on a Netgear WNDR3400 router and is visible as a network drive over which i have been able to read/write files.
The backup process tends to complete about 40% of the way through and then aborts giving the error above.
I tried to do a system image alone and this time the process aborts with the above error after two minutes.
Now, this should not be due to any faulty
hardware.
I am quite confident in this as:
1.
I am able to backup on my windows 7 computer to this external HD when it is directly attached via USB port without a hitch.
2.
I am able to backup to this hard drive over the same router/home network, using Windows XP with NTbackup.

In order to solve this problem, I have:
1.
Tried to do this from a separate administrator acount
2.
Set VSS to automatic and tried to perform backup immediately after a reboot
3.
Checked the registry to make sure that there are no missing user profiles (only two exist, one for administrator and one for me)
4.
Rank chkdsk on both source and destination hard drives (both are new; no errors were found)
None of these changes make windows 7 backup work over my network setup.
None of them prevent me from backing up over the USB drive when connected to the USB port on my computer.
And none of it points to faulty hardware considering this setup worked with
a 10 year old laptop running windows xp with nt backup without a hitch.

Help please!
